We’re in pre-production for Hamlet. What exactly does that mean? Well, we’re gathering a design team, a management team, and performing artists. We’re finding locations and working out the kinks. And we’re brainstorming, hashing out ideas. Our director, Christopher, has completed his first script cut (nope, not making anyone sit through a four-hour Hamlet).
He also works through song. Before he even began cutting the script, he complied a list of songs inspiring the mood, story, and characters as he envisions them.
At our last meeting, I asked if he would share his list of inspirational songs. They are remarkably eclectic and I found myself actually laughing out loud in excitement when I pictured a couple different characters grooving to their own theme music.
Here you go.
- St. Excess – Balzac & the Underpants Band
- Oh My God – Jay-Z
- Don’t Forget to Dance – The Kinks
- Requiem in D minor, k626 – Introitus – Mozart

(We’re not allowed to play these songs for you, for obvious legal reasons, but if you say ‘pretty please’ we’ll eventually figure out how to share our Pandora Stations with you and then you can hear similar music as you thumb through your own copy of Hamlet.)

Love the idea of sharing the music that creates the mood. What a fun list!
